Open Assignment - Project 5

FINAL

For my final draft, I wanted to lean into the "glitched" nature of this aesthetic, and as a result decided to end the video abruptly with the video itself appearing to deteriorate into the static commonly seen on an old VHS tape.  Throughout this assignment I wanted to create an open-ended piece that reflected how memories can warp and blend together, and in particular I wanted to embrace the low quality of these archival videos to highlight the concept of how memories lose their clarity over time.

Datamosh/In Progress Crit [Progress]

Here is a small sample of what I've done with my childhood video tapes; I'm having some trouble figuring out how to do this in a way that isn't strictly video editing, although I do enjoy the direction it's going in so far.
I composed the music playing in the background, but I may have to rework it to not be as upbeat as it is (in order to more accurately convey a feeling of nostalgia).

Datamosh Test [Progress]

For my final project, I would like to create some sort of video piece that deals with memories and how they degrade over time.  I find myself dwelling in my memories of past experiences and lost loved ones constantly, as well as how those memories and experiences molded me into the person I am today.  I intend to compose a song that mirrors these themes of loss and nostalgia, although I'm not sure if an instrumental will aptly communicate those ideas or if it would be necessary to add lyrics as well (the only issue being that I am not nearly as confident a vocalist as I am a musician).  The test utilizes footage of Trashcan Falls, a spot where my first friends in college & I would often go swimming on the weekends.  I also have a collection of archival footage from my childhood in San Francisco, including footage of my grandmother who has since died, and I would like to figure out a way to incorporate memories from across my childhood and adult life.

As memories fade over time, they lose certain details and accuracy in favor of what may be a romanticized view of the past.  For this reason, destructive video editing such as datamoshing is what I will be pursuing, as I would like to reinforce the degradation of these memories through the destruction of the files.

Sea Level PSA - Project 4

FINAL

For my PSA, I focused on global warming and specifically rising sea levels.

I intend to polish up the existing transitions more before the final reel, and I may expand this PSA into a 45 second video in order to add more information.  I ran into some technical problems trying to animate my vector content, and I intend to fix these as well for my resubmission in order to properly show my skillset with both vector based imagery and manipulating it within AfterEffects.

PSA [Progress]

For my PSA, I am focusing on climate change, specifically in relation to the ocean.  I intended to have the glaciers at the beginning of the video shrink, but was having difficulty doing so while maintaining the "water reflection" effect.  In addition, I intend to add a segment that shows a graphic of the United States in order to reference the amount of people who live in coastal areas (and would therefor be affected by rising sea levels).
